The question: When I was 4, my sister was 2. I am now 44. How old is my sister?

Developer answers: 44 - (4-2) = 42

Indeed.

But do you have other ideas on how to answer to this question?

Is 42 the right answer?

The two-year difference between me and my sister will continue throughout my life, so when me turns 44, my sister's age will be 42

Ok, lets imagine. One additional question that might help you think widely:

Do you have a birthday at the same day?

Then there are many options. My sister was born one day after my 2nd birthday.  On my 2nd birthday she was still unborn.  So by the time I am 44, she’s still 41.

Let's get out from our real life. How about dramatic situations?

If my sister died when she was 2. I will be 44, my sister will be 2.

There are still other situations that can be assumed answering this question for the tester.

Suppose I was born on 29/02/1977 and my sister on 01/03/1979. Since 2021 is not a leap year my birthday will be moved to March 1st. Then my sister will be 42 and I will be 44.

Good idea to think about 29th of February! Anything else that might impact? :)

Depending on the nationality of the brother and sister, there may be different calendars. For example, the Muslim calendar is 29 days 12 hours 44 minutes 3.8 seconds, so in some months 29 days, and in others - 30. There will be another calculation).
