How do you guys actually do this job

Just wondering how you guys that have been testing for years start your testing sessions when you get approved for a project. And what tips do you have for us newbies that are just beginning.

It should always be self-explanatory if you really have experience in what the project at hand is asking you to do such as testing an app and reporting bugs as you identify them.
